Memorial Day

This Memorial weekend was a wet, rainy one. We have had a very wet spring making the Malad valley beautifully green. I love this time of year here. North of us the sun had broken through the dark thundering clouds lighting up the slopping hills of Elk Horn Mountain.

Wind had called to see if we had any plans for Memorial weekend, and we didn't. They wanted to know if we wanted to go camping up at Island Park, Idaho. We thought it was too cold for camping. Jessica text me to say her, Seth and Wind were coming down to go camping up North Canyon with some friends. They got to our place and was there long enough to pick up eggs (from our chickens) and a sleeping bag. Their friends, Haze and Wren Murray weren't ready so the three of them came back over to our place. I think they were hungry probably hoping I had dinner. We had already eaten after they left the first time. Wind started pillaging through my frig and pantry. He found some left overs that I think didn't really hit the spot for him and that is because he looked like he was gagging it down. Seth started pillaging Blue's room for a hoodie for Jessica and an extra blanket. I don't think they expected it to be as cool as it was. They then loaded wood from the wood pile and before leaving Wind grabbed a roll of T.P. It stormed and rained heavily all night. The next evening Troy says to me, "You better get ready for those kids, they are going to be crawling in here real soon". It had continued to rain all day and wasn't letting up. I didn't believe they would let the rain end their camping trip, but not five minutes after Troy said that that I got a text from Jessica asking if they could sleep at our place because they were soaked and cold. That was Sunday evening that they spent the night. They spent all Monday with us. It was nice having them over. Usually they are just stopping in for a brief visit on their way somewhere. Seth set the tent up outside so he could spray the mud off and let it dry in the brief time the sun shone. We were able to get the tent back inside before the rain started falling again.
Wind pulled Haze and Wren's camper up the canyon for them.
Troy took the kids to the grave site of their Great great grandparents William Evans Stuart and Mary Ann Thomas Stuart and their Great grandfather Paul Henry Mills at the Malad Cemetery. To the left of Jessica is the grave of Troy's uncle Boyd Mills who died at 21 from Muscular Dystrophy We then showed them the grave of Great grandma Merle Mills' brother who died in the war. She always commented about him being buried under the American flag. The flag is behind Jessica in the picture.

Troy then took us to the St. John Cemetery. Dad shared a few stories of his grandpa Paul. When Seth was not quiet two we would take him to the gas station that his grandpa Brent ran and Grandpa Paul would take him to the rack of candy bars and tell him to pick out some candy. He would let Seth get a couple of handfuls of candy bars. Paul was a good man. Everyone in the community that knew him always says what a good man he was.

Troy has a lot of history in Malad.
